Abstract

The story of the circumstance is a western literary style attributed toKafka. This literary style is almost foreign to Arab literature and Arab writers have come to recognize it through a study of the Western stories and literary styles.
George Salem, the Syrian author, is among the followers of this literary style. He has composed his novel (In Exile) in accordance with the features of this style. This paper adopts an analytical approach to explore the characteristics of this style in this novel.
The results suggest that Salem has employed this literary style to portray the human relationship with the world, depicting the loneliness, inferiority and inability of man in the world. To achieve this goal, he takes advantage of all storytelling elements, creating abrupt, unprecedented and incomprehensiblecircumstances that cover all aspects of the novel's characters, thwarting any chance of liberation from the external deterministic dominance, which is only granted by death.
Determinism and irrevocability of the situation, conflict with the power reference, obligation to compromise, elimination of individuality, secrecy anduniversality are the most prominent components of this story, which have been decoded through an analytical reading of the text.
