Abstract
This study, comparatively, interprets and criticizes two short stories of the writers, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and Sadeq Hedayat (1903-1951), with a view to the short story genre, the Gothic fiction and its elements. The writers of this article have analyzed one of Poe’s short stories, The Pit and the Pendulum (1842), in a comparison with Hedayat, the Iranian writer and intellectual, and his short story, Gojaste Dej (1933), relying on their similarities and differences. The former is a short story from Poe that has been published in 1842 for the first time. It narrates a man who has been condemned to death by the Spanish inquisition. The man, who is the narrator of the story as well, expresses the moments of physical and psychological tortures in a dark prison imposed on him to bring him to death. The significance of the study is that, so far, no major comparative research has been done on Poe and Hedayat regarding Gothic elements. Studying Gothic elements mentioned by Robert Harris show that Hedayat has applied them stronger than Poe.
